Why You Can’t Rush Becoming Your Best Self

Updated: Oct 8, 2024

Sometimes, we can grow frustrated that our growth and healing journey isn't moving faster. We might know what we need to work on, yet facing those things staring back at us in the mirror feels daunting, overwhelming, or like we don't even know where to start. However, with fear present and with a healthy case of hope, we move forward.

As time goes on, we might want to take a sledgehammer to our problems and push ourselves to change even when we have yet to have the tools to commit to those changes; when we do this, though, we often overwhelm our nervous system and have to regroup. Sadly, doing this can even make the journey longer and can cause more hurt for ourselves and others.

So, how do we embrace change, celebrate where we are at, and continue to move forward?

We take in the new sights and the new patterns and drink in the fresh aroma of possibilities. We stay consistent with our commitment to change while honoring our need to rest and take a break when we need it.

What do we do if the patterns resurface? I think of Paul's statement in scripture:  I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do, I do not do, but what I hate, I do. (Romans 7:15) Changing patterns and doing what is best for you in the long term can be difficult when doing what is familiar and comfortable has been your norm, but change is possible. I'd even add that sometimes, the greatest changes look very small to the naked eye.

Think of a woman conceiving a child. We cannot see the little seed growing within her at first, but in time, the hope within her is evident.

Another example can be found in nature. Look at the world around you. Go outside and embrace the crisp breeze. See how the trees in fall compared to the trees in spring? Notice how their beauty grows when they choose to let go and surrender to the seasons.

The colorful tapestry doesn't come from labor or force; it comes from allowing and surrendering to what is.

You might not recognize them from their original form, but much like them, you, too, are shifting. You are evolving from moment to moment. Change comes from allowing the transformation to unfold as you continue to work on yourself.

You might be in your autumn season hoping you can be in spring. Nonetheless, for many, this is something to be birthedfrom your own frondescence. Perhaps you are even on the precipice of breakthrough, even now in the rays of autumn's blaze. 🌻
